An Engineering Fitter fit and fabricate pipework and plate for process, manufacturing equipment or operations.

The Engineering Fitter forms an important part of the fabrication team to ensure that structures, pipework and other items are fabricated in line with the specification and in a safe manner. This role may be based in a workshop or on a process plant. Shift-work may be necessary.


Typical Tasks

  • Checks correct part numbers are used before assembly.
  • Follows engineering and fabrication instructions and drawings to cut and shape all items required using a variety of tools and equipment, some of which require special training, including; flame cutting machines/equipment.
  • Cuts pipes, steelwork to size using cutting equipment in preparation for assembly.
  • Undertakes drilling, sawing and grinding duties.
  • Fabricates pipework and steel plate to standards required
  • Grinds ends of casing in preparation for welding.
  • Updates job status sheets.

Entry criteria

4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) including English and Math’s for a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard

42-48 months
