Course Overview

This course focuses on the core principles of engineering excellence tailored to equip you with essential skills in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), maintenance strategies, and electronic principles.

Additionally, you will gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of electronics, laying a solid foundation for understanding and navigating the complexities of modern technology.


Typical job roles

The L4 HNC General Engineering would ideally suit a member of staff who is currently in a design, maintenance or electronics role (typically a 3rd year apprentice) who wishes to progress their academic learning. It is both an industry focused programme and is a nationally recognised qualification within the sector.

  • Unit 32: CAD for Maintenance Engineer

2nd Year Units

  • Unit 3: Engineering Science
  • Unit 4: Managing a Professional Engineering Project
  • Unit 8: Mechanical Principles
  • Unit 19: Electrical and Electronic Principles

Entry criteria

Candidates are required to have:

  • A BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in a relevant subject grade Distinction
  • A Distinction in Mathematics or Mechanical Principles
  • At least one A level and a minimum of four GCSEs (including Mathematics and Science) at grade C or above.

Mature students with other qualifications or appropriate work experiences may be considered.

Delivery method: Day release on-site delivery, part-time programme

Career/progression opportunities

Pathways include further academic study or entering the workplace following completion of the HNC course.

Holders of the Level 4 Higher National Certificate may be encouraged to continue their part-time studies on a Higher National Diploma. In some cases, they may be able to gain admission to degree courses.
